(SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NE) Siouxland doctors and nurses were learning new and better ways to give children the medical care they need on Thursday. South Sioux City is hosting the 2011 Upper Midwest Region Pediatrics Conference this week.
Medical professionals from the area are listening to 18 different speakers talk about 16 topics on children's health care. A dozen health organizations have booths set up raising awareness about their services.
"It's something very unique especially for this region. And so we can bring all the expertise for one place for a two day seminar to be able to give people that concentration of educational resources," said Edward Truemper, M.D. with the Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha, NE.
"This is where things are happening. They're interested in knowing, 'what's the cutting edge?' And so we're here saying, 'Hey, this is something that we want you to be aware of,'"said Blake Collingsworth, a Co-Founder of the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation and writer of the children's book "Be Safe Around Water: Josh the Baby Otter".
"And there's not many programs nationwide like our program with a children's book discussing this problem," said Collingsworth.
Collingsworth wrote the book after his two–year–old son drowned three years ago. It's a children's book dedicated to teaching safety around the water. He said this conference is a perfect place to promote his message.
